Suntheanine is the brand name for Taiyo's isomerically pure
L-Theanine, a unique amino acid found in green tea. Absorbed
in the small intestine, Suntheanine crosses the blood-brain barrier
and into the brain in a dose-dependent manner. Suntheanine has
been shown to stimulate the production of alpha brain waves (a state
often achieved by meditation – one of deep relaxation and mental
alertness). Entering the U.S. market in 2000, Suntheanine is a dietary ingredient intended for use in dietary supplements.

L-Theanine is an non-essential amino acid only found in green tea and a single species of the mushroom (Xerocomus badius). It was first identified and isolated as a major component of green tea in the late 1940's. Studies indicate that L-Theanine interacts with the neurotransmitter, GABA (gamma-aminobutyrate). GABA, known for its importance in nervous system functioning, works with the mood centers of the brain. Studies in Japan show that L-Theanine helps support the body's ability to deal  everyday anxiety, improving learning performance, heightening mental acuity, promoting concentration, reducing negative side effects of caffeine and supporting the immune system.

GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and regulates neurotransmitter activity to prevent overstimulation/hyperactivity.
